From toddlers taking their first steps towards independence to older children developing their own sense of style, every child is unique, and updating their bedroom can be one of the most rewarding home projects.
As a child’s interests and personality evolve, so too should the spaces they spend the most time in. Whether you're creating a room inspired by their favourite hobby, introducing colours and character, or simply giving the space a much-needed refresh, paintable MDF panels offer an easy way to create a room that feels personal, practical and designed to grow with them.
A child’s bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It’s where they play, learn, dream and unwind at the end of the day. As children grow, their bedrooms often become one of the first spaces they can truly call their own, making it important to create an environment that feels comfortable, inspiring and reflective of who they truly are.
Designing a room around a child’s interests doesn’t mean sacrificing style. In fact, the best children's bedrooms strike a balance between personality and practicality. Whether it's a love of particular colours, hobbies or emerging passions, incorporating thoughtful elements into the design helps create a space where a child feels happy, confident and at home. This is exactly what Ali from @shemadehome achieved!
As we’ve said, children need a space of their own that’s inspiring and fun. Where we adults get to pick the tone of every other space, a child’s room is all about them.
In this remarkably charming room, Ali has perfectly captured a sense of playfulness, while still making the space perfectly stylish and functional. The challenge for Ali wasn’t just refreshing the room, it was creating a space that balanced her son’s personality with a design that would still feel stylish and timeless.
One of the easiest, and most impactful products used was the paintable MDF panelling. Used as the foundation of the room, the vertical grooves instantly added texture and structure, while the paintable surface made it easy to customise the look with a relaxing, youthful shade of blue, and décor that reflected her son’s interests.
One of the main reasons why MDF panelling works so well in children's bedrooms is its flexibility. The pre-primed surface can be finished in any colour, making it easy to create a scheme that reflects a child's interests today while remaining adaptable for the future. Available in both full-height and half-height designs, the panels add instant texture and character without requiring any extensive renovation.
For many, wall panelling can feel like an ambitious project. However, Ali found the panelling to be one of the simplest parts of the entire transformation, saying:
“They were the easiest win of this makeover. This little guy and I were able to take it off the to-do list together.”
That ease and simplicity matters. Where DIY projects can become stressful when they involve complicated measuring, excessive prep or specialist tools, these panels helped create a high-impact feature wall without turning the makeover into a major construction job.
Now complete, the finished result is a stylish space full of character and charm. The colours, textures, wallpaper and, of course, the football rug, have all combined to create the most perfect of finishes.
"All the panelling and the wallpaper make it feel so cosy and he absolutely loves it."
In addition, paintable wall panels give you the flexibility to update the room when your child’s tastes change. Like with a wall, you can easily repaint the panels, allowing you to refresh the room as your little one grows into a bigger one.
As this Ali’s project demonstrates, transforming a child's bedroom doesn't have to involve overly complex solutions. Sometimes, a single panelled feature wall combined with some beautiful wallpaper and details are enough to introduce colour, texture and personality while creating a space that feels entirely their own. Whether you're updating a toddler's first "big kid" bedroom or refreshing a room for a growing football fan, paintable MDF panelling provides a timeless backdrop that can evolve alongside them for years to come.
